Theater Review: It's still a 'White Christmas' at Pa. Playhouse

Published December 10. 2015 11:00PM by DEB BOYLAN Special to The Press

How about a little song and dance to go along with your Christmas celebration?

"Irving Berlin's White Christmas," weekends through Dec. 20, Pennsylvania Playhouse, 390 Illick's Mill Road, Bethlehem, provides plenty.

World War II GIs turned song and dance men, Bob Wallace (Jason Zimmer) and Phil Davis (Seth Rohrbach), find themselves not quite by accident in remote Pine Tree, Vermont, at the Columbia Inn owned by their former commander, General Waverly (John Bracali).

Rohrbach as Phil is the more savvy ladies' man, while Zimmer as Bob plays awkward around the ladies. Both actors are spot-on in their portrayals. Zimmer is uniquely expressive and Rohrbach is a pro in this type of role.

The women that catch the eyes of Wallace and Davis are the singing sister act, Betty (Heather Reese) and Judy Haynes (Veronica Bocian). Reese and Bocian perform well together and are perfect stage counterparts to Zimmer and Rohrbach.

Kathy Hontz as Martha Watson, the inn's front desk clerk, is a gem and she gives a standout performance in the number "Let Me Sing And I'm Happy."

Young actress Jenna Seasholtz (Susan Waverly, the General's granddaughter), in her Pennsylvania Playhouse debut, reprises the song in Act 2. Seasholtz just about steals the show and will certainly steal your heart.

Smaller roles of Snoring Man (James A. Vivian), Mrs. Snoring Man (Wendy Borst) and Ezekial Foster (Ted Williams) provide large amounts of laughs.

Rita (Sherilyn Jones) and Rhoda (Christina Check) as Davis' cast also add additional comic relief.

The ensemble cast shines during the song and dance numbers. Fans of tap dance will especially enjoy "Happy Holiday-Let Yourself Go," "Blue Skies" in Act 1 and "I Love A Piano" in Act 2. "Snow" is an ensemble number that is quite a bit of fun.

An orchestra provides the music accompaniment. Set pieces are wheeled and easily maneuvered between scenes to change settings.

Director Chip Rohrbach keeps the pace fast and the cast playing to their strengths. It is obvious everyone on stage is giving their all and having quite the time of it.

"Irving Berlin's White Christmas," as interpreted by Rohrbach and company, delivers on so many counts. Audiences will not be disappointed. The capacity crowd on hand was clearly enjoying the performance. Many could be seen tapping their toes to the familiar tunes.

With the weather unseasonably warm this holiday season (much like a major plot line in the play), Pennsylvania Playhouse may be the closest you will come to "A White Christmas."
